Adopt-A-River Site Program |
What’s it all about?
The Upper Merrimack Monitoring Program [UMMP], managed by the Upper Merrimack River Local Advisory Committee, is offering for “adoption” eleven sites along the Merrimack and its tributaries, from Franklin to Bow. The upper Merrimack needs the stewardship of its residents, businesses, and visitors who have come to enjoy its clean, healthy water and beautiful shores.
How does it work?
 |
Adopters assist with water quality monitoring activities at their site including bacteria and chemical testing as well as participating in biomonitoring [collection of insects and other aquatic creatures for laboratory analysis]. The Adopt-a-River-Site Program supports the UMMP in the processing of samples and maintenance of monitoring equipment. Adoption cost is $300 per site.

What’s in it for me?
Being a good neighbor and steward to the river is just one of the benefits. Learning more about the life and health of the river is another. Volunteers receive free training in a variety of river-related conservation activities. Recognition is important, too! The UMMP has been awarded funding for production of a brochure and newsletter as well as generating a report based on three years of water quality monitoring data. Adopters will be prominently highlighted in the report as well as listed in the newsletter and brochure. You will also be kept informed of river happenings including an invitation to the volunteer-recognition event. Being recognized as a friend to the river demonstrates the commitment of your organization to protect the upper Merrimack for present and future generations to enjoy.
